The Goal-Setting Process

1. Decide exactly what you want in every key area of your life.

Start off by Idealizing. Imagine that there are no limitations on what you can be, have or do. Imagine that you have all the time and money, all the friends and contacts, all the education and experience that you need to accomplish any goal you can set for yourself. Imagine that you could wave a magic wand and make your life perfect in each of the four key areas of life. If your life was perfect in each area, what would it look like?

1. INCOME – how much do you want to earn this year, next year and five years from today?

2. FAMILY – what kind of a lifestyle do you want to create for yourself and your family?

3. HEALTH – how would your health be different if it was perfect in every way?

4. NET WORTH – how much do you want to save and accumulate in the course of your working lifetime?

Three Goal Method – in less than 30 seconds, write down your three most important goals in life, right now. Write quickly.

Whatever your answer to this “Quick List Method” way of writing three goals it is probably an accurate picture of what you really want in life.

2. Write it down.

Your goals must be in writing. They must be clear, specific, detailed and measurable. You must write out your goals as if you were placing an order for your goal to be manufactured in a factory at a great distance. Make your description clear and detailed in every sense.

Only 3% of adults have written goals, and everyone else works for them.

3. Set a deadline.

Your subconscious mind uses deadlines as “forcing systems” to drive you, consciously and unconsciously toward achieving your goal on schedule. If your goal is big enough, set sub-deadlines. If you want to achieve financial independence, you may set a 10 or 20-year goal, and then break it down, year by year, so that you know how much you have to save and invest each year. If for some reason you don’t achieve your goal by the deadline, simply set a new deadline. There are no unreasonable goals, only unreasonable deadlines.

4. Identify the obstacles that you will have to overcome to achieve your goal.

Why aren’t you already at your goal?

The Theory of Constraints – there is always one limiting factor or constraint that sets the speed at which you achieve your goal.

What is it for you?

The 80/20 Rule applies to constraints. Fully 80% of the reasons that are holding you back from achieving your goal are inside yourself. They are the lack of a skill, a quality or a body of knowledge.

“Only 20% of the reasons you are not achieving your goal are on the outside. Always start with yourself.”

5. Identify the knowledge, information and skills you will need to achieve your goal.

Especially, identify the skills that you will have to develop to be in the top 10% of your field.

Greatest Discovery: Your weakest key skill sets the height of your income and your success. You can make more progress by going to work on the one skill that is holding you back more than any other.

Key Question: “What one skill, if you developed and did it in an excellent fashion, would have the greatest positive impact on your life?”

What one skill, if you developed and did it consistently, in an excellent fashion, would help you the most to achieve your most important goal? Whatever the skill, write it down, make a plan and work on it every single day.

Wealth in the Information Age

  1. The Hunter-Gatherer Age: In the Hunter-Gatherer Age, humans relied on nature to provide wealth. They were nomadic and went where the hunting was good and the vegetation plentiful. You had to know how to hunt and to gather—or you died. For the hunter-gatherer, the tribe was social security. Socio-economically, everyone was even. They were all poor.
  2. The Agrarian Age: The Agrarian Age saw the rise of classes between people. Due to the development of technology to plant and cultivate the land, those who owned the land became royalty, and those who worked it became peasants. The royals rode horses while the peasants walked. Socioeconomically there were two groups, the rich and the poor.
  3. The Industrial Age: While many people would place the beginning of the Industrial Age in the 1800s with the rise of factories, I actually think of it as beginning in 1492 with Columbus. When Columbus struck out to find the New World, it was to find new sources of valuable resources such as oil, copper, tin, and rubber. During this time the value of real estate shifted from growing crops to providing resources. This led to the land becoming even more valuable. And three classes emerged: the rich, the middle-class, and the poor.
  4. The Information Age: Today, we are in the Information Age, where information leveraged by technology and inexpensive resources like silicon produce wealth. This means that the price of getting wealthy has gone down. For the first time in history, wealth is available to just about everyone. There are now four groups of people: the poor, the middle-class, the rich, and the super rich.

How to be stressed in 2011

If you found year 2010 stressful, and you would want to keep yourself stressed in the New Year, then make sure you understand the principles why you should stay stressed.

Here are the reasons why staying stressed is so important:

STRESS HELPS YOU SEEM IMPORTANT. Anyone as stressed as you must be working very hard and, therefore, is probably doing something very crucial.

IT HELPS YOU TO MAINTAIN PERSONAL DISTANCE AND AVOID INTIMACY. Anyone as busy as you are certainly can’t be expected to form emotional attachments to anyone. And let’s face it, you’re not much fun to have around anyway.

IT HELPS YOU AVOID RESPONSIBILITIES. Obviously, you are too stressed to be given any more work. This gets you off the hook for all the mundane chores. Let someone else take care of them.

IT HELPS YOU AVOID SUCCESS. Why take risks just to be successful, when by being stressed you can avoid all kinds of risks? Stress keeps your performance level so low, even success won’t be a threat.

IT GIVES YOU A CHEMICAL RUSH. Stress can actually be considered a cheap thrill, and you can give yourself a ‘hit’ or a ‘high’ any time you choose. But be careful! You just might get addicted to your own adrenaline.

STRESS ALSO HELPS YOU KEEP YOUR AUTHORITARIAN MANAGEMENT STYLE. The authoritarian style of ‘Just do what I say!’ is generally permissible under crisis conditions. If you maintain a perpetually-stressed crisis atmosphere, then you can justify an authoritarian style of management all of the time.

And now that the New Year is here, make sure you do the following in order to stay stressed:

NEVER EXERCISE. Exercise wastes a lot of the time that could be spent worrying.

EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT. Hey, if cigarette smoke can’t cleanse your system, a balanced diet isn’t likely to either.

* GAIN WEIGHT. Work hard at staying at least 25 pounds over your recommended weight.

TAKE PLENTY OF STIMULANTS. The old standards of caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and cola will continue to do the job just fine.

GET RID OF YOUR SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEM. Let the few friends who are willing to tolerate you know that you concern yourself with friendships only if you have the time - and that you never have time. If a few people persist in trying to be your friend, avoid them.

PERSONALIZE ALL CRITICISM. Anyone who criticizes any aspect of your work, family, house, car or dog is mounting a personal attack. Don’t waste time to listen to them; be offended, then return the attack!

THROW OUT YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR. Staying stressed is no laughing matter, and it shouldn’t be treated as one.

MALES AND FEMALES ALIKE BE MACHO: Never ask for any help. And if you want it done right, do it yourself!

BECOME A WORKAHOLIC: Put work before everything else, and be sure to take work home in the evenings and for the weekends. Keep reminding yourself that vacations are for sissies.

PROCRASTINATE. Putting things off until the last second always produces a marvelous… amount of stress.

WORRY ABOUT THINGS YOU CAN’T CONTROL: Worry about the stock market, the credit crunch, water shortage… And earthquakes. And the approaching Ice Age. You know, all the big issues.

* BECOME NOT JUST A PERFECTIONIST, BUT ONE WITH IMPOSSIBLY HIGH STANDARDS. And either beat yourself up, or feel guilty, depressed, discouraged and inadequate when you don’t meet them.

When you do all these, I promise you, life will become unbearable. You will become unbearable. And you will lie down on your bed and wonder why some people just have the good fortune of being successful and happy – and you don’t… Duh?!

There will be challenges awaiting us, but learn to live one day at a time. Never for a moment forget that God is still in control, and that you are not God.
